No Country for Old Men

By Cormac McCarthy

One day, Llewellyn Moss finds a pickup truck surrounded by a bodyguard of dead men. A load of heroin and two million dollars in cash are still in the back. By taking the cash he sets off on a destructive path followed by the border’s most dangerous man. In a twisting tale between one of the deadliest killers who flips coins to determine life or death, a man hoping to change his life and a sheriff who has lost faith in humanity McCarthy explores good and evil in Texas’s borderland.

Thoughts

McCarthy is notorious for his fast paced narratives with a blistering, action packed narrative layered on top. No Country for Old Men is no exception. Set in the counties near the border of Texas and Mexico the setting matches so perfectly with this way of writing because it moves along like a tumbleweed in the desert driven by the unstoppable force of wind behind it. While a quick read the book packs a bloody punch. Moss is in a cat and mouse chase with a serial killer who uses a cattle gun and a shotgun to dispose of anyone in his way. Hired by an organization that needs to retrieve its stolen money, Anton Chigurh stops at nothing and no one to get it back from Moss. Chigurh kills everything in his path citing the inevitability of death. He acts as a force of nature that is not personally killing these people, but more that he is its facilitator. This cat and mouse chase is followed painfully by Sheriff Bell who starts to see the world as a place full of evil. He is perpetually a step behind and throughout the novel provides an internal monologue of how the world he once knew can never be recovered because of characters like Anton Chigurh. In the Oscar winning film of the same name you can see this tale unfolding, but the book highlights the themes and motivations of its starring trio making it all the more worth the read.
