While I stand in support of all of my brothers and sisters of color, I could never understand what that experience is like. In Between the World and Me Ta-Nehisi Coates helps to expose what it means to be black in America. He takes us through his upbringing in West Baltimore and into the halls of Howard University where his infatuation with racial justice takes form. As he writes to his growing son the reader is swooped up by the narrative which makes the letters drip with humanity and the longing of a better life, from a father to his son. Traversing through the implications of living with a different skin color, Coates shows us the world through the eyes of a black man’s effort to build a better life for his son.
