How to Invest in Real Estate
By Brandon Turner & Joshua Dorkin
Real estate is the proverbial elephant in the room when it comes to wealth building. Everyone knows that you can make money from it. But the how behind it has eluded millions of Americans for decades to the point that they just give up. Brandon Turner and Joshua Dorkin take their knowledge from first hand experience, and the vault of real life real estate investors on the platform they founded called BiggerPockets. Throughout How to Invest in Real Estate they take you through the most common ways to tap into this serious wealth generator, remove all of the sales fluff and take you straight to the approach.
“Life is too short to be stuck in a job you hate. Choose a career that makes you excited to wake up in the morning, energized through the day, and content when you fall asleep at night.”
Thoughts
Ever since I was eighteen my Dad wanted me to get into the stock market so I could become a millionaire one day. I was decent at school and thought if I could pass an AP class in high school I could do anything in life. And then I tried to invest $2,500, all of the money I had, in my newly minted Roth IRA account. In the seven years since first opening that I have lost thousands of dollars in minutes, I have made even more in the same amount of time and have tried trading stocks on three different financial services platforms. Recently after investing in passive real estate investments I have found that real estate is no joke. You can be in it for the short term, and you can be in it for your entire life. And the returns are so tangible that if the math is right the risk is mitigated. With stocks the math could mean nothing if a maverick CEO tweets something ridiculous *cough* Tesla *cough*. With How to Invest in Real Estate I did not find a secret bullet on how to become a millionaire. But what it does provide is a nice lay of the land for how to get into real estate investing. For example it outlines all of the ways one could possibly get into real estate. From rental properties to flipping houses you can find something that fits your strategy if you’re looking. A great intro book, but look into BiggerPockets and their lineup of books if you do find an approach that catches your eye.
