Dark Matter

By Blake Crouch

Every decision we’ve ever made had alternate options. Those alternatives would have taken our lives down so many different paths that would have been our reality had things been different. In other words, there are other universes that span time and space based on the decisions we make. Dark Matter examines Jason Dessen, a physics teacher, whose quiet life with his wife and son gets flipped on its head when a masked gunman kidnaps him and brings him to a lab. When he returns he enters a reality where he never met his wife, and his son was never born. And someone is chasing him.

“It’s terrifying when you consider that every thought we have, every choice we could possibly make, branches off into a new world.”

Thoughts

The first book I ever bought on my Kindle and I made a great purchase. I started off reading books that were either movies or a classic that I had passed by. Dark Matter was neither, but its premise seemed so compelling: every decision you make branches off into infinite possibilities and realities. What would happen if they all existed and you could access them? Would you like living multiple lives? Or would you miss the simple life you’ve always known? Jason’s experiment with this leads to absolute chaos, and a really fun read that has a modern answer to an age old question. Blake Crouch does a great job with pacing this book as some of its concepts are a bit abstract and sciencey. But the intelligence behind the plot makes you want to discover what the hell is happening to Jason. It is a fully gripping story that eases you into the infinity of his realities by learning through the eyes of Jason. Luckily Jason is a physics teacher so it helps to have him narrating.
