A Game of Thrones

By George R.R. Martin

The global phenomenon that is HBO’s Game of Thrones series starts with the first installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. This first book, that lends its title to the name of the hit HBO series, introduces us to the fantasy world of Westeros and all of the amazing characters like Tyrion, Jon Snow, and Daenarys and the most important families in the land like the Starks, Targaryens, Lannisters, and Baratheons. Our quest starts with a call to action by Robert Baratheon of Ned Stark to join him in King’s Landing to become the new Hand to the King. As the adventure unfolds, and a mythical power begins to brew beyond the Wall in the North our families begin to feud while the long winter of Westeros starts its evil descent on the world. This follows almost word for word the first season of the HBO show.

Thoughts

Obviously I am a massive fan of the HBO series. And yes I did watch the series on TV first before reading the books series. Therefore I am fake from a book fan perspective. And yes, this is easily one of the best fantasy series of all time that absolutely consumed me for years and then brutally let me down in the eighth season, but I digress. During the times when the series was not on TV I would pick up the books to learn more about the world of Westeros because it is so inventive and addictive. One thing I love about the books is that it provides such a detailed version of what we already know and love about Westeros and each chapter is from the perspective of one of our favorite characters (shoutout Tyrion Lannister). So you will always find something new that you missed in the show. The only thing I don’t love about this series is just that it isn’t finished yet. George R.R. Martin has created this vast and illustrious universe that has so many storylines that it is truly hard to comprehend how a single old man can came up with this. This first book explores one of the greatest introductions to one of the greatest fantasy epics of all time. Am I biased? Yes. Do I care? No. It’s binging season and you might as well binge read too.
