Between the World and Me

By Ta-Nehisi Coates

In a profound letter to his teenage son, Ta-Nehisi Coates takes the reader on a journey into the annals of American history and its relationship with racial injustice. The story presents a polished prose about the underlying emotions of how a black man navigates through the false freedom of the American Dream. Coates paints a portrait for his son about his upbringing and how to take action to protect his body, and more importantly his soul.

“You are growing into consciousness, and my wish for you is that you feel no need to constrict yourself to make other people comfortable.”

Thoughts

Racial injustice has been a systemic issue in the United States for decades. While I stand in support of all of my brothers and sisters of color, I could never understand what that experience is like. In Between the World and Me Ta-Nehisi Coates helps to expose what it means to be black in America. He takes us through his upbringing in West Baltimore and into the halls of Howard University where his infatuation with racial justice takes form. As he writes to his growing son the reader is swooped up by the narrative which makes the letters drip with humanity and the longing of a better life, from a father to his son. Traversing through the implications of living with a different skin color, Coates shows us the world through the eyes of a black man’s effort to build a better life for his son. Profound and uncomfortable the letters in Between the World and Me will force the reader to examine what racism in America means, and how the Dream takes on a different meaning based on the color of your skin.
