Fight Club

By Chuck Palahniuk

An insomniac hasn’t slept in days, maybe weeks. He goes through this modern world like all of us do every day. He hates job, he buys crap and he feels like he’ll never leave a mark on the world. That is until he meets Tyler Durden. Tyler is everything he wants to be: handsome, no fear, and a leader of men. Once Tyler creates an underground bare knuckle boxing match, his world begins to make sense. As Fight Club grows and the rituals Tyler preaches take hold, his life finally has meaning. But even if you find a coping mechanism, can you ever really escape from your mind?

“Only after disaster can we be resurrected. It’s only after you’ve lost everything that you’re free to do anything. Nothing is static, everything is evolving, everything is falling apart.”

Thoughts

Fight Club is legendary, and for good reason. I rarely do this, but I watched the movie before reading the book it was based on. Interestingly enough the movie absolutely tanked at the box office when it came out in 1999. Chuck Palahniuk was even dead broke after Fight Club, his debut book, sold close to nothing on the bookshelves. But once the DVD was released it turned into the cult classic it is today it catapulted both the movie and book into infamy as one of the best stories ever. Typically, I prefer books to movies because an author is given the unique right to transport you into the mind of the protagonist compared to a movie which is usually more passive. That said I can’t decide which is better here. The book was such a great read I finished it in two days no problem. But it is written in such a way with this recursive narrative that makes you feel like you’re going crazy, similar to what’s playing out in the scenes. The movie on the other hand has Brad Pitt and Edward Norton playing two of their best roles ever, and thankfully the director, David Fincher, follows the book almost exactly. Even if you’ve watched the movie a hundred times you’ll still love the book. And if you’re kind of crazy like me you’ll somehow feel more normal by the end of it.
