Hacking Growth

By Sean Ellis & Morgan Brown

What defines growth? What secret ingredient makes the world’s most recognizable brands go from scrappy start ups to global behemoths? Sean Ellis invented the methodology of Growth Hacking to understand just that. In Hacking Growth he and Morgan Brown provide a guide to give businesses and their employees the ingredients necessary for achieving growth. Pulling on case studies of companies they’ve consulted for, like Dropbox, to actionable steps of taking data and turning it into an iterative testing process, this book is essential for anyone in Marketing, Product or Analytics roles.

“One of the cardinal rules of growth hacking is that you must not move into the high-tempo growth experimentation push until you know your product is must-have, why it’s must-have, and to whom it is a must-have: in other words, what is its core value, to which customers, and why.”

Thoughts

Whether you work in tech or a more traditional field, the ideas and methodologies in this book make you really think about the company you work for or one you’ve been thinking of launching. For me, this was really insightful. I will be joining a Growth Marketing team soon, and because my role will be heavily focused on this exact process it gave me plenty of interesting ideas. One that really resonated was thinking about how analytics are at the core of every decision that needs to be made. Whether it be surveys or full funnel dashboards there is so much to learn about how your current users behave within your product experience. Since college I have been working predominantly on the new customer acquisition side, but the book makes a strong point in that your data analysis could reveal so many opportunities for growth that are much cheaper to implement than a new digital marketing campaign. This type of thinking was a welcome change and was honestly exciting to read about. The notion of being customer-first gets thrown around a lot, but this is the first book I’ve read that actually gives you step by step experiments to get more in touch with them. If you work in tech or are just interested in learning about these explosive companies this is the book for you.
