Into Thin Air

By Jon Krakauer

In this real account of climbing Mount Everest the only thing crazier than the foreboding mountain are the people who decide to ascend it. Jon Krakauer, played by Michael Kelly in the movie Everest that adapted this novel for the screen, and other members of two commercial expeditions journey to the highest peak in the world. On their final ascent to the top, a violent and unaccounted for storm rips through the peak forcing the group to endure one of the most impossible situations to survive in. Krakauer lives to tell the tale, although not everyone makes it down.

“It was titillating to brush up against the enigma of mortality, to steal a glimpse across its forbidden frontier. Climbing was a magnificent activity, I firmly believed, not in spite of the inherent perils, but precisely because of them.”

Thoughts

I heard of Everest coming out back in 2015 and the trailer definitely makes it look insane. First off, climbing Mount Everest isn’t something that most people do. So right off the bat I was like okay someone has to die right? Second, one of the worst recorded storms hits the peak of the mountain right as a bunch of regular citizens are about to reach the top. They literally can’t go down because it would be even more dangerous based on where they are in the mountain, and have to continue to climb upwards. All the while an ice storm rips their entire life to shreds. And did I mention this is a real story? Talk about electric. Although Jon Krakauer is a journalist this reads more like a thriller than a documentary and it has action packed into every page. While yes the details are gruesome and the book is better than the movie because of that it is cool to see Jake Gyllenhaal, playing Scott Fischer, as a chill climber bro and the entire destruction of the crew on the screen. Is it sad? Of course. Is it a book you can’t put down? Definitely. Do I think anyone that climbs Mount Everest just wants to die? 100%. And for those reasons I am glad Krakauer and others lived to tell the tale.
