Letters to a Young Writer
By Colum McCann
A collection of essays by lifelong writer Colum McCann, but instead of looking inward and boring us with his memories he uses these pages to inspire and excite us. Fifty-two very quick essays cover a variety of topics including finding your own voice, not being a dick, and embracing criticism. McCann speaks from experience and from mentoring young writers and what you get is a heartfelt and energizing read that will make anyone want to pick up a pen and paper (or open their laptop). If you ever want to feel less crazy about wanting to start writing or feeling perfectly crazy for wanting to drop everything and write the next great American novel, then give this a read.
“We get our voice from the voices of others. Read promiscuously. Imitate, copy, but become your own voice.”
Thoughts
I read this in a couple of hours, it’s that fast of a read. But each page packs a mighty little punch. The content in here was exactly what I was looking for. I used to write poetry and short stories back in high school and college much more frequently than I do now. Now I usually get a few pages of an idea down and forget about it because of all of the other random crap in my life I need to figure out. Part of me wants to drop everything and move to a cabin somewhere and just shred through a Word Doc with flames coming off the keyboard as I do. This seems pretty unrealistic at this point in my life, but this book made me feel like it was totally possible (although only for a few hours). Writing is something I say I have a passion for, but never actually applied myself to. For that I am a fraud and a phony. However, I do find this medium of expression to be the most beautiful. That’s why I love to read I guess. Although I tend to palaver I do still have the dream of publishing my own book. If you have ever had that dream, pick up this book for a few hours and see where it takes you. McCann has a way of empowering you like you don’t expect. If you have the time chase it. And if you don’t have the time, find it.
