Maybe You Should Talk to Someone

By Lori Gottlieb

Lori Gottlieb, a therapist, brings us on a trip through the lives of her patients and then gets meta on us when she realizes her own therapist is hearing a lot of the same from her. How can this be? Her patients are a narcissistic Hollywood producer, a twenty-something hooking up with all of the wrong guys, and a suicidal granny who wants to do it on her birthday. There’s no way the perfect life of LA super therapist Dr. Gottlieb has anything wrong with her to the likes of these folks. But what she soon learns from her own therapy sessions is that pain, and more importantly healing are a shared human experience. An experience that ignores the problem and only needs a solution.

“There’s no hierarchy of pain. Suffering shouldn’t be ranked, because pain is not a contest.”

Thoughts

Therapy was something a few friends of mine had started to go to. Originally when that word would get thrown around I would immediately think the person who needed therapy would be straight out of the looney bin. As our millennial generation began to open up about mental health awareness I too withdrew some of my previous sentiments. Now I think getting therapy is an incredible idea for most people I know, including myself. To be clear, I have never been to a therapist. This is a major disservice to myself, and I understand that. However, I now see the incredible value they can provide. Think about it: a friend that you can reveal all of your dirty little secrets to and they have to listen, but better yet they actually have to carry that weight and help you figure out what the hell to do! That’s a blessing, and a decent service fee, but a blessing nonetheless. This book further pushed me towards the idea of getting my own. While it can get a little dry at times, and feels like the conclusions Lori begins to draw are a bit self-fulfilling it is a nice modern take on therapy that at the very least can be appreciated. Pick it up if you are interested in psychology, and or mental health awareness.
