Morning Star
By Pierce Brown
Darrow breaks out of jail with the help of his friends. His identity as a Red is revealed to some Golds, and his mission has never been more important with the Society in the midst of an intergalactic war. The Sons of Ares, who saved Darrow early in the first book, are trying to keep the revolution alive. Darrow has played the games of the elite. Darrow has fought tirelessly to keep the dreams of Eo alive. Darrow has become what he most hated in the service of his people. He has waited patiently in the background of the Gold society. But his time has come to unleash the power of the Red revolution on the universe. The Reaper’s time has come.
“Forget a man’s name and he’ll forgive you. Remember it, and he’ll defend you forever.”
Thoughts
Originally the Red Rising series was supposed to be a trilogy with Red Rising, Golden Son, and Morning Star. Since its critical acclaim Pierce Brown has extended the series to two more novels including Iron Gold and Dark Age which continue the chronicles of Darrow the Reaper. To be honest the first book, Red Rising, was honestly such a pleasure to read and I was truthfully blown away with The Institute. Like I mentioned in its review it is probably one of the most creative inventions I can think of despite having similarities to The Hunger Games. It is wholly unique and plays into the follow up books so well. However, the second book was slightly eh to me, and then this third one also didn’t blow me away to the degree the first one did. Now don’t get me wrong if you are looking for a new series and are a fan of sci-fi this can definitely do it for you. For me, I just couldn’t really see myself getting the two new books after finishing this third. I just grew tired. While the characters are all awesome it just sort of repeats the same call to action of “the need to live for more” and I just stopped caring. Still a very inventive series, and the politics alone can keep you entertained for pages on pages. Worth a read since it is going to be made into a series of movies from Universal Pictures, and once that comes I may give this another look.
