On Writing

By Stephen King

The boogeyman, Stephen King, brings us his thoughts on writing and packages them up with a nice little bow. Part memoir and part master class this book lets you peek into the mind of this creative legend, but also gives aspiring writers a toolkit and process to weed out the crap in their own writing… or to even just start. It seems as though every new show or old movie is somehow connected to a Stephen King novel. One thing King makes clear is that “books are a uniquely portable magic,” and if that’s the case then he’s a goddamn wizard. Written soon after his near death accident, Stephen King gives us all of the juicy tips and tricks we’ve been looking for.

Thoughts

It may be abundantly clear by now, but I like Stephen King. His character development, world building, and plot architecture are the best in the business. In On Writing he gives aspiring writers like myself a toolkit to use when sitting down at their desk to get into a particular piece of work. He also touches on how important everyone’s voice is and how just getting started is the hardest part which is something I deeply related to. One thing I really enjoyed about reading this was also learning about how Stephen King came up into becoming the legend that he is today. He was a school teacher writing stories on the side. He’d send in story after story and get rejection after rejection until finally a few of his lesser known works got some publication and could help balance out his pitiful teacher salary. From here he kept at it. Then finally came along the world renowned Carrie, a staple in the Stephen King library and loved by fans all across the globe. Hearing his story made me more interested in learning from him, and made me pick up a few more books, namely the Bill Hodges trilogy. You are a class act Mr. King, and we appreciate all that you do. This is a solid read if you want to learn more about King or just writing in general.
