Thoughts

This is when the heat gets turned up a notch and the series starts to flirt with a resolution. Susannah has returned to her old Odetta way, except as the crazier murderess Mia who is honestly terrifying. The majority of this book is about Mia’s world altering childbirth that is standing in the way of Roland and his destiny at The Dark Tower. This just goes to show how impressive Stephen King is when it comes to character development and Susannah’s story arc. Despite all of her reform and as she finally finds a family in Eddie and the ka-tet she completely flips a switch and the schizophrenic mad woman comes back stronger than ever. On top of that this book goes through a ridiculous world bending plot that plays with both time and space. While The Drawing of the Three introduces us to this idea of multiple realities Song of Susannah doubles down. Paired with the path of the beam and the force of The Dark Tower the storyline with Jake and Father Callahan protecting the rose in Calvin Tower’s lot creates a multi-layered story that honestly make things really confusing. But alas, if you take it slow and remember that nothing in Mid-World makes sense then you can power through. The most important thing here is that it is another set up book, but it provides really important details that you don’t want to miss for the finale.
