Talking to Strangers

By Malcolm Gladwell

Interacting with other humans is the focus in the latest book by Malcolm Gladwell, Talking to Strangers. He argues there could be serious consequences when we don’t effectively talk to strangers. Pulling from historic events like Fidel Castro deceiving the CIA or Neville Chamberlain trusting Hitler and more recent events like Sandra Bland’s arrest in Texas Gladwell turns his wit on something that seems so simple, but so hard to master. At times controversial, but wholly introspective Gladwell’s latest installment takes a stab at what it means to connect with others, especially when you don’t know them.

“To assume the best about another is the trait that has created modern society. Those occasions when our trusting nature gets violated are tragic. But the alternative – to abandon trust as a defense against predation and deception – is worse.”

Thoughts

Malcolm Gladwell is well known for his theories leveraging his vast knowledge of behavioral economics and applying them to modern topics. In his newest installment his thesis of improving our interactions with strangers was intriguing. And in this book, much like all the other Gladwell books, he leverages his masterful tell them what you’re gonna tell them, tell them it, then tell them what you just told them. It was almost certain to be impactful. But for whatever reason I was unable to find strong through lines between each story he dissects. Each one on their own were really interesting and took a look at a certain chapter of the history of the human race, but the main message was lost for the book. I learned a couple of cool things like going into every encounter without bias and assumption, but with humility. But just reading that sentence should be enough to convince you, right? It sort of feels like a no-brainer. Either way an interesting one that I think would be worth a read if you are a huge Gladwell fan, but choose some of his others like Blink first.
