The Institute

By Stephen King

Luke Ellis is a boy genius whose life gets ripped apart when The Institute kidnaps him in the middle of the night and murders his parents. At 12 years old he wakes up in The Institute with other special kids. As the administration runs their experiments and as his bond between the other children grows his telekinetic and telepathic powers grow, as well. As he discovers more about the intentions of The Institute and the horrible director, Mrs. Sigsby, he bands together his unlikely new friends to fight back and get their lives back.

“He was only twelve, and understood that his experience of the world was limited, but one thing he was quite sure of: when someone said trust me, they were usually lying through their teeth.”

Thoughts

Like Stranger Things with all of the freaky telekinetic kids you could want, The Institute takes you on an action packed fight between good and evil. It is a contender for my favorite Stephen King books of all time. Something about the way Mr. King can peek into the mind of children, makes you remember your own childhood while also empowering the kid still inside you. Luke Ellis and his crew do that for you here. With the odds stacked against them, and the absolutely awful adults in The Institute this story brings out the rebel in you. This plus the added element of having telepathic communication, and insane telekinetic strength makes this whopping 500 pager such a breeze to read it feels like a pamphlet. This will be the best sci-fi thriller you’ll read in a while, and I’d be surprised if it doesn’t come out as a movie / TV show soon.
