The Last Lecture
By Randy Pausch
Consider your own demise and ruminate on what matters most to you: What wisdom would you impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance? If you passed away tomorrow, what would you want as your legacy? This is what Randy Pausch examines in his Last Lecture as he stares terminal cancer right in the face. This book is a collection of his Last Lecture given in the Computer Science department at Carnegie Mellon where he taught. While terminal cancer sounds morbid, Prof. Pausch takes this chance to empower, inspire, and unite anyone who reads this to chase their dreams and never lose sight of them. Because you always have all the time in the world, until you don’t.
“Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted. And experience is often the most valuable thing you have to offer.”
Thoughts
Randy Pausch is awesome. Sure at times this book, like most “self-help” books, can sound like a Hallmark card, but given his situation I really did have to stop and reflect multiple times. He covers everything here. Love, loss, being a parent, being a kid and even holding onto those youthful dreams you have as one. The deeper you get into this the more you want the guy to make it so he can give more lectures or write more about his adventures. This is a truly powerful read and one that you can probably finish in a day or two. I read it in college when I think I dreamt more than any other period in my life. Yes throughout childhood I had dreams of being an astronaut and all that basic crap, but in college? This is a time when what you’ve been dreaming of and working towards is put to the test. And not only your dreams, but those of your parents, your family, your community. After reading this book I felt a bit lighter. Like the weight of all of those dreams shrunk just enough for me to poke my head up and look around. And look around I did. The world is filled with opportunity. Sometimes you just need a reminder on what your values are, and if your dreams are aligned to them. This book is that reminder. Thank you and rest in peace, Randy Pausch.
