The Last Wish (The Witcher #0.5)

By Andrzej Sapowski

A collection of short stories introducing the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia. Geralt is a cold blooded assassin, enigmatic sorcerer, and played by Henry Cavill on the new Netflix hit series The Witcher. A witcher’s sole responsibility on the Continent is to kill monsters and get paid for it in order to restore order in the world. In this fantasy drama Geralt must navigate the ever evolving landscape and runs into many humans and monsters alike, each proving more wicked than the next. This intro book covers the first few episodes in Netflix’s new series.

“Lesser, greater, middling, it’s all the same. Proportions are negotiated, boundaries blurred. I’m not a pious hermit, I haven’t done only good in my life. But if I’m to choose between one evil and another, then I prefer not to choose at all.”

Thoughts

I was looking for the next best fix in my post-Game of Thrones depression. While I was scouring the internet for another fantasy series I found The Witcher. I further learned that this was being made into a series by Netflix. Interest piqued. I began reading this and while I really did enjoy a lot of the world building and the way Sapowski chooses to introduce the world of the witcher and how he fits into it, I wasn’t terribly aware of all that was going on. Some classes of civilians like elves or sorcerers were really cool, but I realized this world would require a big commitment on my end. Feeling like it wasn’t worth fully exploring into this new realm I didn’t pick up subsequent books. The Witcher definitely has major appeal (it has been made into multiple video games, and now TV show), and has all of the blood-thirsty battles and character arcs you could want. I will definitely return to this series, but if you want to dip your toes into this world watch a few of the episodes on Netflix. While there will be overlap I’d return to the book series if you just can’t resist finding out more about Geralt and his adventures around the Continent. Critically acclaimed series I just need to find time to sink my teeth into. However, still an awesome introduction that is easy to pick up and figure out what the hell is going on.
