Thoughts

The Midnight Library in its very essence asks the question: what makes life worth living? Nora Seed is suffering from depression linked to the relationships in her life. Her mother passing away, her father’s overbearing expectations, a brother who will no longer talk to her and a fiance she has fallen out of love with. She blames herself for ruining all of these relationships and decides to take her life, one she was none too fond of to begin with. Between life and death she arrives in a library that will allow her to live any life she can imagine. As she navigates through this surreal experience it’s interesting to see how the regrets and failures she perceives slowly slip away as other outcomes play out in the alternate universes. What Haig does well is take a the complex topic of the multiverse and layers on a very human touch. Most of us can relate to Nora in that we are too hard on ourselves and allow our regrets to immobilize us, and in some cases break us down. The best part of the book is it allows the reader to live vicariously through Nora’s attempts at a new life in search of finding the best option. Through deep emotional and philosophical exploration anyone who reads this can understand the experience of wondering “what if?”. What Nora’s time in the library explains is that to live a happy life “what if?” is not the right question to be asking.
