The Outsider
By Stephen King
When a young boy is mutilated and found in a town park, the primary suspect with irrefutable evidence against him is Terry Maitland. One of the town’s most popular citizens, coach of the Little League baseball team, and father to two daughters Terry (played by Jason Bateman in the new HBO series) is publicly arrested and put on trial. The town’s families are heartbroken, especially the parents. Detective Ralph Anderson, a father himself, takes on the case and while the odds seemed to be stacked against Terry tries to find some shred of truth that refutes the evidence. Adapted into the new hit HBO series, The Outsider explores if it’s possible to be in two places at once and brings a modern day boogeyman into the quiet town of Flint City.
“People are blind to explanations that lie outside their perception of reality.”
Thoughts
The Outsider was my pick for my book club which got absolutely murdered by the other book clubbers when it came time to review. I chose this book because I am a huge Stephen King fan, and has been turned into a new HBO series. Throw in the fact that it was a continuation of the Bill Hodges Trilogy with a cameo from Holly of the Finders Keepers agency, it was a no brainer. However, this book was not perfect. It was good, and I really enjoyed it, but it was not the best from my man Mr. King. The creation of the modern day boogeyman and how he plays with the duality of reality (read that ten times fast) was honestly captivating… for the first half of the book. Then he starts to introduce supernatural elements that force this well made crime mystery, where it is almost impossible to solve the case possible because of far fetched plot lines. It was sort of annoying after a while. However, the world building and the use of fear in that world was a great feat that should be praised. On top of that King breaks this fear down even further between kids and adults who have different views on fear, and more importantly how they deal with it. Overall, if you are a King fan or just generally looking for a new thriller this could be the book for you. Just don’t expect to be blown away like I came in thinking.
