The Revenant

By Michael Punke

The Rocky Mountains in 1823 provide the chilling backdrop for the story of Hugh Glass (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), a trapper in the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. He and his fellow trappers live a brutal life on the frontier. Hugh Glass is one of the most respected and experienced trackers in the company. One day a scouting mission puts Glass face-to-face with a grizzly bear that viciously mauls him. The other frontiersmen leave him for dead. But when Glass survives he sets out on a three thousand mile journey to get revenge on his betrayers. Now a major motion picture by the same name starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.

“Of course it’s not simple. Who said it was simple? But you know what? Lots of loose ends don’t ever get tied up. Play the hand you’re dealt. Move on.”

Thoughts

Here we go with another movie that was inspired by the book that came first. In The Revenant we are introduced to a complete badass, Hugh Glass. The fact that Leonardo DiCaprio was cast for this role made me immediately interested in learning more about this story. Add in Tom Hardy as the antagonist and now we got ourselves a party. I still haven’t gotten around to watching the movie, but Leo finally got his Oscar for his performance in this one. Apparently in order to get into the character of Hugh Glass he would sleep in deer carcasses. I don’t need to see the movie to know he deserved it after hearing that. Now for the book it is a little slow and while the bear mauling scene is obviously pretty wild Hugh is left to crawl around the forest for so long. Which I definitely understand he just got his body ripped to bits by a grizzly bear and probably can’t just walk that off, but reading about his corpse crawl around was not entertaining. All in all it’s a great redemption story, and pulls from historical events on the American frontier so it feels like it could be real which is always appreciated. Read this to learn more about the character Leo got his Oscar for, and if you are sick enough to enjoy bear maulings. Lots of blood. Lots.
