The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
By Taylor Jenkins Reid
International movie star Evelyn Hugo has been in the spotlight her entire life. Yet no one knows her real story. Monique Grant is an ambitious nobody who has dreams of rising in the journalism industry. When Evelyn reaches out to do an exclusive interview as the sun sets on her illustrious career no one expects her to choose Monique for the interview, not even Monique. But as Evelyn unravels the secret life she’s had for decades the reason becomes shockingly clear.
“It’s always been fascinating to me how things can be simultaneously true and false, how people can be good and bad all in one, how someone can love you in a way that is beautifully selfless while serving themselves ruthlessly.”
Thoughts
This is not a book I would typically read, but am so glad I did. Chosen for my book club I was coming into it expecting something I would read to get through, and not something I would enjoy. Having just finished it I have to say I will be recommending it for a while. First off, the page count is deceiving. This book reads fast and the narrative is so enticing because of how it’s set up. Evelyn mysteriously picks this low level journalist to reveal everything about her life to with the caveat that Monique will be instantly shot into fame having taken the interview with her. But the entire time you are wondering why her? Why would Evelyn, the most beautiful and famous woman in the world, choose someone so random to be the one to capture her life. As Evelyn’s story unfolds you wonder at every turn where Monique fits into the picture. From former lovers to the fact they both lived in LA, you’re forced to guess as each mini chapter rolls by. But the beauty of it is you enjoy the ride. You learn things about fame, love and family all while reflecting on your own story. Evelyn’s story should be this far off one of a millionaire movie star, but it comes across as so human. She deals with relationships, understanding herself and navigating life with the highest of stakes at play. A truly surprising, yet incredible narrative that you can crush in a day if you wanted. Highly recommended if you want to ground yourself and raise yourself up all at the same time.
