Yearbook
By Seth Rogen
Seth Rogen’s collection of stories, writing ideas turned movies and growth as a hilarious stoner. He takes us from his high school days all the way to his crazy rise into fame as a child actor on Freaks and Geeks. From one drug to the next we are taken on a journey through the mind of one of the 21st century’s funniest celebrities and are left with even more great Seth content to smile about.
“Never quit, but sometimes do quit, ’cause you simply might not be that good at some shit.”
Thoughts
First and foremost any additional Seth Rogen content in my life is welcome. At any point on any day. He’s one of my favorite actors, movie directors, comedians, etc. and he’s actually one hell of a ceramist too (person who makes pottery – yeah I had to look that up). So this review is biased. However I will start with the book may not be for everyone. It’s a bit all over the place, there is no general theme and it’s more so a stream of consciousness around key events in Seth’s life. If you’re a fan of Rogen then this is ideal and probably over delivers on expectations. If you’re looking for a memoir that is not this AND you don’t like Seth Rogen you might want to steer clear. In the book he chats about his upbringing and how he started out in comedy which is really amazing for a teenager. From there he gets into Hollywood, making movies and all of the drug filled experiences in between. What really struck me was that some of his best movies are taken almost frame by frame from events in his life like Superbad and Pineapple Express. It’s so fascinating to see how these hilarious real life stories expand into timeless movies. There are solid tidbits in here as well, don’t get me wrong. He speaks to Jewish hate, the legalization of drugs (duh) and global politics (remember The Interview?) which all leave behind an interesting view on the guy you didn’t see before. All in all a must read for any Seth Rogen fan.
